Interview with Author Colleen Tew

Tell me a bit about yourself….

I’ve been an author for eight years. I’ve been married to the love of my life for sixteen years. We have four daughters, two grandchildren, a couple of dogs, and a friendly feline named Smokey. We spent the summer canoeing and fishing. Correction, they fished while I read.

What genre/s do you write in?

The genres I write are urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

How long have you been writing?

Technically, I’ve been writing all my life, but have been doing it professionally for eight years.

Do you have any published books or articles? Tell me a bit about these and what publishing route you took.

There are the first two books in the Shadow Faith Vampire Saga: Birth of a Vixen and Virus Within. I’ve also started the Dream Prophet Trilogy. The title of the first book is Awakening. I do self-publish through my own publishing company, Delphian Hope Publishing. The books are all available in Kindle Unlimited and pretty much everywhere else ebooks are sold.

Did you use an editor? If so who?

I work with an editor, Jeffrey Holland. He helps me with continuity.

Did you use a book formatter and cover designer?

Calibre was the ebook formatter I was using. Now I’m shopping around for something easier to work with for myself. I design my own covers.

Did you self-publish or get traditionally published? How did this go for you?

Self-publishing has worked out well for me. Birth of a Vixen reached the top 100 on Amazon’s bestsellers list more than once.

How do you market your work and promote your brand?(Include links)

I market my books through Bookbub, Amazon, and Facebook. I have an author’s page on all three sites, as well as Instagram and Twitter. Colleen Tews: Books, Biography, Blog, Audiobooks, Kindle

What social media and writing platforms would you recommend?

I recommend using every social media out there to get the word out about your work. I’m just getting started on tiktok, but there are a lot of others who use it for #booktok, #writetok, and #authortok. As for writing platforms, I’ve heard great things about Wattpad for beginning authors.

Do you use an agent?

No, I do not have an agent. Though I would like a PA.

Do you use paid advertising? If so what?

I pay to advertise on Kindle, Facebook, and Instagram.

Do you have a blog or website?

My website is

What inspires you most to write?

The need to tell a story from beginning to end drives me the most. I love watching the characters come alive on the page. It’s like creating a movie in my mind and retelling it for others.

What do you do to help with writers block?

This is going to sound odd, but scheduling posts for all the social media sites I’m on helps a lot. Something about copywriting that helps get the juices flowing.

How do you plan your writing and start?

I create a spider outline of every important plot Point. Then I start at the beginning. Which is easier said than done.

Is writing your full time job? If not what else do you do?

Yes, I am a writer full-time.

What are you working on at the moment?

At this moment, I am working on Vindication, the third book in the Shadow Faith Vapire Saga.

What is your target audience?

My target audience is men and women from 18 to 60 years old. People who love the things that go bump in the night, who enjoy strong female characters, and aren’t easily squeamish.

How long does it take you to write a book?

Writing a book can be fast. I wrote Virus Within in two weeks, but the editing is what took the most time.

When did you first discover you enjoyed writing?

When I was ten, I wrote my first screenplay about a haunted house and the couple that lives in it. The play was inspired by Garth Brook’s Thunder Rolls.

What is your writing schedule look like?

I write for at least three hours a day, starting at around ten am. Unless the muse hits me earlier in the day.

What does your family think about you writing?

They love it. We’re a creative family. My husband is an actor. One of my daughters pays her bills by selling art commissions.

What do you do when you are not writing?

Reading or binging shows based on books.

Where do you get information and ideas for your writing?

I research like crazy. Creating a whole new world means you need to know how everything works. As for the story ideas themselves...My dreams mainly.

What do you think makes a good story?

What makes a good story is standout characters, a plot that ebbs and flows, and has that WOW factor. That unmistakable cannot put it down vibe that sucks you in.
